Dalai Lama: Tell me a story, Heinrich. Tell me a story about
climbing mountains.
Heinrich Harrer: That's one way to fall asleep. Those
stories bore even me.
Dalai Lama: Then tell me what you love about it.
Heinrich Harrer: The absolute simplicity. That's what I
love. When you're climbing your mind is clear and free from
all confusions. You have focus. And suddenly the light
becomes sharper, the sounds are richer and you're filled
with the deep, powerful presence of life. I've only felt
that one other time.
Dalai Lama: When?
Heinrich Harrer: In your presence, Kundun.
---From the film, Seven Years in Tibet (1997)

“Some people want to see God with their eyes as they see a
cow and to love him as they love their cow---they love their
cow for the milk and cheese and profit it makes them. This
is how it is with people who love God for the sake of
outward wealth or inward comfort. They do not rightly love
God when they love him for their own advantage. Indeed, I
tell you the truth, any object you have on your mind,
however good, will be a barrier between you and the inmost
truth.”
---Meister Eckhart (c.1260-c.1328), German theologian,
mystic

You yourselves know, dear brothers and sisters, that our
visit to you was not a failure. You know how badly we had
been treated at Philippi just before we cane to you and how
much we suffered there. Yet our God gave us the courage to
declare his Good News to you boldly in spite of great
opposition. So you can see we were not preaching with any
deceit or impure motives or trickery.”
